With the break from the old dynastic government in 1912, the government control of porcelain production relaxed, giving artists new opportunities to create new interpretations of old forms. In this particular case, two ideas come into focus. One is the simplicity, the spareness, of the design - a simple cherry blossom branch vaguely delineated - almost Japanese, or Haiku in tone. The other idea is this new color ground which I have not seen on Chinese ceramics prior to this period. I am sure that examples abound, so please bring them to my attention. The color is so succulent, soft, and calming. I am sure that famille rose is incorrect, but the color is a masterpiece.
