Mortlock China Company

Mortlock China Company was a British porcelain retailer and distributor founded in 1746 by John Mortlock (1698 - 1758) which split in 1809 to operate as two concerns, one at 250 Oxford Street run by John Mortlock (1776 - 1837) and the other at 18 Regent Street run by William Mortlock (1778 - 1833). The former business operated until 1896, while the latter closed its door in 1933 or 1930 depending on the source.

The Mortlocks were very influential and powerful china dealers who could compel the major makers such as Coalport to not brand their wares except with the Mortlock name. The firms enjoyed royal patronage and handled the major British china makers such as Coalport, Minton, and others.
