J Hoare & Company

J Hoare & Company is the namesake of John Hoare (American, 1822 - 1896), an Irish immigrant who settled first in New York City to resume the glass cutting business he had begun in England in 1848. Through different partnerships, he eventually assumed ownership of the company which finally bore his name. He established a shop in Corning, New York in 1868 but eventually sold the business to his son James and another partner George Abbott. The business continued under troubled financial circumstances until 1920.

Hoare himself was a master cutter, winning the gold medal at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, along with 3 other medals. His firm also supplied cut glass to the Grant White House.
