Alexander John Drysdale

Alexander John Drysdale (American, 1870 - 1934) was a prominent southern artist associated with Louisiana whose paintings extolled the beauty of the state's bayoux. His novel technique of diluting oil paints with kerosene allowed him to create hazy, dreamy landscapes much coveted for their silent beauties.

Born in Marietta, Georgia, he moved to New Orleans in 1883 where he worked various jobs while studying art at night. His success eventually allowed him to study in New York City with luminaries such as William Merrit Chase, George Inness, among others.
