From the Sunday December 10, 1899 New York Herald is an advertisement for RIPANS tablues, an over the counter remedy for a litany of ailments. Its founder was George Rowell who was an advertising trailblazer in the brokerage business. RIPANS was made for decades before disappearing into the mists of time in the 1960s.

This advertisement is documented to have appeared in multiple publications, but this example from the Herald is surely a one of a kind survivor - or close thereto.

But oh the nostalgia it evokes, using all of the sparkles of the season to enhance its message - channeling The Night Before Christmas, the reindeer, the sleigh, the stockings hung by the chimney with care, and last but certainly not least, jolly St Nick himself standing before blazing yule fire with a sack full of RIPANS. And most extraordinary of all is the full color printing of this ad which surely cost a fortune in those days.

The back of the page includes the latest fashion news from Paris. So you can display the reverse side between January and October, then flip it around for Christmas - so versatile.
